A VA loan is a home loan available to U.S. Armed Forces active servicemembers, veterans, and their surviving spouses. Qualifying for a VA loan can allow eligible individuals to borrow funds for the purchase, construction, repair or improvement of a home with terms more favorable than otherwise available. At Starboard Financial, we offer a VA Loan Prequalification to help you determine if you are eligible for this VA benefit.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must have sufficient income for the loan, suitable credit, and have a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). If you are concerned that you may not meet the income or credit requirements, a VA Loan Prequalification can help you find out right away. It’s important to know that since the VA guarantees VA Home Loans, we are able to be more flexible with income and credit concerns. Additionally, you do not need to have a copy of your COE for a VA Loan Prequalification. At Starboard Financial, we can work directly with the VA to help you get your COE. The requirements to receive a COE vary depending on your status with the U.S. Armed Forces. All applicants must have fulfilled certain service requirements and must not have a dishonorable discharge.

Active Duty Servicemembers

If you are currently on active duty, you need to have 90 continuous days of service before you can receive your COE.

National Guard and Reserve Members

National Guard and Reserve Members who served in the Gulf War or on active duty from 8/2/1990 – present, with 90 days of active service are eligible. You may also qualify if you served in the Selected Reserve or National Guard for six years AND are still serving in the Selected Reserve, were transferred to the Ready Reserve or Standby Reserve after honorable service, were discharged honorably, or were placed on the retired list.

Any veteran who has served for 24 continuous months or the full period they were called to active duty, with a minimum of 90 days, since 8/2/1990 is eligible for this benefit. Veterans who served for a continuous 24 months or the full period they were called to active duty, with a minimum of 181 days, between 9/8/1980 to 8/1/1990 are also eligible. Veterans who served between 9/16/1940 and 9/7/1990 are eligible if they served 90 total days of active duty during WWI, Korean War, or Vietnam War or 181 continuous days during peacetime. You can also find the details about these service requirements on the VA Website.
